If you sign up to theSconul Access scheme before the librarycloses, you can also visit and use the resources of other universitylibraries in the UK. You need a SCONULcard to be able to use other libraries. More information can be found here:

…than just being able to search for books and journals. For example, did you know that you can save your search queries for future reference and set up alerts to be notified when new books are added to stock? No? It’s easy enough to set up. Simply sign-in to the catalogue, run your search as normal and then click on the ‘Save query’ link which appears to the left of the results (just below the search box, in fact). There is then an option to save the query or set up an alert. You can manage your saved queries and alerts by clicking on ‘My Account’ in the top right of the screen.
Ever wondered what the ‘e-Shelf’ link in the top right of the catalogue screen is used for? The e-Shelf is where you can save lists of useful books and journals and then organise them into folders. For example, you might wish to add a list of reading for your module so that you can easily refer back to it and see which books are currently available. To add items to your e-Shelf, make sure you are signed in to the catalogue and then click the little white star which appears next to each result in the results list. The star turns yellow, indicating it has been added. If you click on the e-Shelf link in the top right of the page you can then view and organise all items you have added.

The aptly named info skills will help staff and students in the initial stages of their research. The tool is aimed at students who are writing their first assignments and need help with a few of the fundamental steps in the research process:
Identifying what information you need
How to find information
Evaluating the information
Finally referencing your information correctly

Hi all,
I know we are all heading for the holiday season... but before we do, December is likely to be very busy. There are a lot of hand in dates before christmas and also a lot of exams after in Jan. So we are preparing for a busy time in the library.
A few tips:
-There are new printers and photocopiers but please give yourself enough time in advance of your deadlines to get printing etc done!!

Self service holds

Self-collection of hold request books at Docklands Library

Good news for all students and staff at Docklands who request books from the library! You will no longer need to queue at the library counter to collect your hold request, but will be able to pick it up yourself at any time, day or night.

When you have received notification, either by email or text, that your requested book is available for collection, just go to the Hold Request Collection area (to the right of the Library counter) and follow the instructions displayed.

The books will be filed by ID number order. For students this is the number on your UEL ID card; members of staff will find their ID number in the notification email or can contact a member of library staff if they are unsure what it is.

Hi all,
"UEL joins the Eduroam Community
IT Services is happy to announce a new service for all UEL network users. “eduroam” is a new global initiative to help members of the academic community stay connected while visiting other academic institutions.

Currently available in over 80 universities in the UK and over 1000 globally, the service allows users to connect to other universities wireless networks using their home institution credentials. This takes the mantra of 'single sign-on' to whole new levels and heralds a new dawn for inter-university collaboration.

Users with wireless devices should be able to connect to the ‘eduroam’ network , anywhere in the world. When prompted for credentials, your username should be in the format userid@uel.ac.uk . Once your username and password are validated, you are online and can browse the web.

We recommend, where possible, that you connect to the eduroam network at UEL before trying elsewhere. Once you get a profile setup on your wireless device which works on a UEL campus that same profile should work at any participating organisation.

The service went live last week and and has already been used by visitors to UEL from Oxford, Kent, Portsmouth, Queen Mary, Goldsmiths, Essex and SOAS universities.

ANTE: Abstracts in New Technologies and Engineering (formerly Current Technology Database), is an abstracting and indexing service monitoring publications from the U.K. and the U.S. Coverage includes new technologies such as information technology and computing, electronics, biotechnology, medical technology, as well as engineering (including construction, electrical and chemical engineering) and allied subject areas. Abstracts are available from January 1993 to the present.
Please note that it is only available on campus!

Changes to Digimap

Hi there,
Just to let you all know that there are some changes that will be happening to the Digimap database. Digimap is removing the digimap classic mapping facility from the end of January 2009. If you use Digimap and are registered you should recieve e-mail notification of the changes.
Please be aware that any maps saved in your Classic Map Chest will be removed after the 26th Jan, so make sure that you save these if you still need them.
Digimap classic has been replaced by the new digimap Roam.

Change in library policy

Dear all,
This is to update you all in a change of library policy.
The change concerns our policy on book renewals. In future the library system has been set so that it will automatically renew items that you have on loan. So the good news for you and your students is that this change will hopefully enable you to avoid fines. There will be an e-mail sent to you to say that your items have been renewed for you. The only time that an item is not renewed will be because it is reserved by another user. It is hoped that the new policy will help to encourage students to return items that are reserved by another student.
Please let me know if you have any feedback on the changes, but I think that it is something that will generally be well recieved.
I hope that you all have a lovely christmas break and a happy New Year!

New Library Catalogue

The Library and Learning Services have just brought in a new library management system and with this is a new library search engine. It is easy to search, however if you require any help using it, please call into the library for tution.
I hope that you will all find it easier to use and search once you are familiar with it.

Pay fines without staff help

Paying fines gets better by the day. You no longer need to queue at the Library counter just to pay fines.
As well as the telephone payment recently introduced, you can now pay fines whenever the library is open by just using one of our self service machines. These are available to use during library opening hours.

Virtual referencing - Coming soon in 2009

Watch out for the new service we are introducing in late January to early July. Staff and students will be able to chat to Librarians and receive instant reply to their subject queries. The service will be available during term time between 11-3pm Monday - Friday. We will also continue with our Ask A Librarian service and queries can still be sent to us via email.

Library Research Support Day - Tuesday 3rd June 2008

I’d like to invite you to a Library Research Support day on Tuesday 3rd June. The day is aimed at postgraduate research students and members of academic staff and it’s an opportunity for us to showcase some of the services we provide to support our research community at UEL.
We will be running a series of short workshops throughout the day, covering a range of topics including e-books, e-journals, literature searching and alerting services through online databases, Boolean search techniques and Endnote.

The day’s events will take place in the Business School, in the main lecture theatre and in the Library’s Information Skills and ECDL training rooms.

New OS Access

The digital archive of Ordnance Survey (OS) maps - back to 1998 - can now be viewed in the UK's six deposit libraries - the British Library is closest to us - using new web-based software developed by Dotted Eyes.

The OSMasterMap allows precise recording of landscape changes over time. A limited number of customised A4 colour print-outs can be made for private use.

I would like to inform you that the complimentary database ‘GreenFILE’ has been added to our EBSCO host profile. The database page on the LLS website has been updated accordingly. It is a bibliographic database of information about environmental concerns and ’Green Info Online’ has made this database freely available.
GreenFILE indexes scholarly and general interest titles, as well as government documents and reports. This resource offers a unique perspective on the positive and negative ways humans affect the environment. Drawing on the connection between the environment and disciplines such as agriculture, education, law, health and technology, GreenFILE serves as an informative resource for anyone concerned about the issues facing our planet. I think all academics have access to this site but have asked Michael Parkes, who has so ably assisted Toby & I with this job of work, to check and open the site if it is not.

Please could you spread the word about the quiz to students and staff, especially Module Leaders and tutors of the Skills Modules in your schools. I will also email the Assessment Working Group and the AI Responsible Officers Group suggesting that the quiz should be recommended to students in School AI Hearings.

Dare to be Digital 2008

Just some information about a competition that might be interesting for our computing students.

Dare to be Digital is the UK's premier video games development competition which supports the creation of video games prototypes by talented, young developers in order to showcase their talent and prepare them for working in industry. Teams of students studying Arts, Computing and Audio related degree courses at University (usually in their 3rd and 4th years), are given the opportunity to develop a computer game prototype for 10 weeks during the summer in a near to real world development environment, whilst receiving support from industry specialists.To help them along the way the students receive £1700 and help from industry specialists to compete for a place in the final. The finalists of the competition will then go on to compete for cash prizes by pitching their prototype to a high profile of judges from the video games business. The 3 winning teams then form the entries to the BAFTA Ones to Watch award which is presented at the BAFTA video games awards.

Fines Block

Some of you may have found that you cannot renew your library books due to a fines block that has been put on all accounts. Basically, anyone with fines from last semester - staff or students - have been blocked. However, it has been decided at our Customer Services Meeting today that the blocks will be removed from all staff accounts. So the fines will remain, but staff will now be able to renew and take items out once again.

How to access e-books

I thought I would send a reminder on how to find e-books.

I think the simpliest way is to go into the catalogue, put your term in as keyword search and choose ebooks from the dropdown menu, you will get a list of e-books on that subject.

You can also check by logging on to Athens and choosing Dawson books or Myilibrary from the list of resources. Unfortunately, we are buying the books from 2 different platforms - hence two different ways to access the lists. We all want to simplify this, so hopefully that will happen in the near future. We also have some e-books from JISC but only until 2009. I will post those titles in the SCoT area on this blog.

So, you can see why I recommend going through the catalogue!

Remember, you will need an Athens username and password to actually get into the books themselves.

Another point that has come up during our questionnaire sessions - the above link goes to the Subject Pages on the Library Webpage. These are lists of general websites, grouped by subject. The Computing page had nothing on it when I inherited it so I created a set of Del ici ous links. But I would really appreciate any suggestions from lecturers as to any other links that would be useful to students.

This goes for Surveying, Civil Engineering and Electrical Engineering as well. Those pages have links but not through Del ici ous. When I have a chance I will change them over because I think that it is a much more logical arrangement. So, any suggestions for additional links would be most welcome.

Reading Lists

Some issues have come up since I have started doing the Library Questionnaires, so I wanted to address them ASAP.

Lecturers usually order their books through their library representatives (see previous post) but are some are not aware that they should send me their complete reading lists so that I can input them onto UEL Reading Lists. There is a link on the Library Homepage.

It is a very time consuming process to enter the data, but really worth it for the convenience for the students. But unless the lists are kept up to date, they are not alot of use.
